Worship of nature and planetary events is a fundamental feature of  Sanatana Dharma.

Rivers have long held a place of such privilege. More particularly, it has become a custom and tradition since time immemorial to celebrate the transit of Jupiter in a particular zodiac house as Pushkara festival of a particular river. The word “Pushkara” derives from the sanskrit word “Pushti” meaning nourishment and “Kara” meaning the doer. Hence, it is the energy that nourishes.

Between 12th to 24th October, 2018, Jupiter enters the zodiac sign “Scorpio”, associated with the sacred river Tamraparni. For this TamraparaniPushkaram festival, special arrangements for worship is being made from Papanasam to Punnakayal river belt. It is expected that 1 Crore pilgrims from all over the country will participate in this event.

MahaArthi, spiritual discourses, Veda recitation and special prayers are being organized in several places along the banks of the river. Snaanam (taking a dip in the river), Pithru Karma (rites for the ancestors) and Dhaanam (Charity) are certain integral austerities observed in this significant festival.
